Differences between a Gas Strut (Gas Spring) & a Hydraulic Damper

Gas struts, sometimes referred to as gas springs or gas shocks, provide a force. Dampers on the other hand only provide a reactionary force to slow motion. For example a damper would prevent a lid from lowering quickly, where as a gas strut could be used to push a lid up.
